Sunderland man jailed for shining laser at police helicopter crew

A man from Sunderland has been jailed for six months after shining a laser at a National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter while it was helping officers on the ground in Northumbria.

The incident happened on 30 July 2024. The helicopter crew were in the middle of an operation when the laser was pointed directly at them. Thankfully, they were able to stay in control and continue their work safely.

Cameron Ronald Daniel Jackson, 19, appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on 19 May 2025, where he admitted to the offence. He was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay a £154 fine.

Laser attacks on aircraft are incredibly dangerous. They can distract or temporarily blind pilots, putting lives at risk - both in the air and on the ground. This case is a clear reminder that this kind of behaviour is taken seriously and will not be tolerated.

T/Inspector Phil Emmerson from NPAS said:
“Pointing a laser at an aircraft is not a joke - it’s dangerous and could lead to disaster. We’re pleased with the court’s decision and grateful to Northumbria Police for their quick response and support.”

NPAS would like to thank Northumbria Police for their work on the case and everyone involved in bringing it to court.
