UK Airprox Board publishes findings into Lakenheath incident

Following the publication of the UK Airprox Board’s findings into the 2024 incident near RAF Lakenheath, Chief Superintendent Vicki White, Accountable Manager at the National Police Air Service (NPAS), issued the following statement:

“We acknowledge the findings of the UK Airprox Board and the report published in relation to the incident on 22 November 2024.

“On that evening, our crew was tasked by the local police force to assist in the search for suspected drone activity in the Newmarket area.

“As noted in the report, and in the absence of any contradictory information, the crew acted on the belief that they were observing drone operations.

“At NPAS, safety remains our foremost priority. It is imperative that any concerns raised by our crews are reported without delay and thoroughly investigated to determine any potential risk to aviation safety.

“The crew demonstrated professionalism and sound judgement in identifying a potential hazard.

“With no traffic information provided and no situational awareness regarding the presence of the F15 aircraft, the crew correctly returned to base as a precautionary measure.

“We note the UK Airprox Board’s conclusion that there was no risk of collision.

“NPAS remains committed to supporting the highest standards of aviation safety and to working collaboratively with our partners across the sector.”
